Schlapp has managed to stay in the right frame of mind and stay on top of her game by working closely with White House teams in political matters and legislative affairs, and the overall communication team. In her current role she's focused on several issues including school safety as well as opioid abuse. She does not interact much with the media as part of her role. She gained attention in the wake of being announced as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp is faced with an administration roiled by a variety of concerns, which includes a president acting as its own communication director and Cabinet Secretaries caught up in the controversies surrounding their respective departments. But through it all Schlapp remains focused on the mission in hand and has worked closely with the White House's political affairs and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as in the communications department in order to oversee policy implementations. To date, her focus is on issues like security in schools and the opioid crisis, trade, infrastructure as well as other topics. The position she holds, however, means that Schlapp does not have contact with many journalists. But, back in March, her name was floated to be a possible person who could replace Hope Hicks at the Communications Director post. It hasn't been a pleasant fight. Allies to Schlapp and Tony Sayegh one of the other candidates for the post have been fighting over the media. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when The Washington Examiner printed a bad article about his character.
